Movie Review: Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013)

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Irascible Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and his young and impressionable grandson, Billy (Jackson Nicoll), set out on a road trip across America. Hidden cameras capture their insane and shocking encounters with a diverse set of unsuspecting citizens, including male strippers, disgruntled contestants (and their mothers) from a children’s beauty pageant, mourners at a funeral home, patrons at a biker bar, people with the best longboards with batteries and more. Based on the “Jackass” TV series.

I saw Bad Grandpa as ‘recommended’ movie in my Netflix account. I’m not a fan of Jackass series and have never watched Jackass and considering this is part of a Jackass series, I wasn’t interested at first. But out of boredom one day, I decided to randomly pick this movie to put on while I do other things. I ended up watching the whole thing. Twice.

Bad Grandpa is more like a hidden camera type of show with genuine reactions from people. It’s about this old guy, Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) whose wife passed away but then suddenly given the responsibility to take care of his grandson, Billy because Billy’s mom is going to prison. Since Irving is now a free man, of course, he doesn’t want to take care of Billy. So he decides to send Billy to his sleazy, no-good dad but then along the way, they start to bond. The grandpa is just as immature as the grandson so they’re a perfect match. Actually, the grandpa might be more immature than the grandson.

I’m very impressed with the makeup. You really can’t tell that it’s Johnny Knoxville underneath that wrinkly old man. I saw the extra behind the scene movie where they showed the progress of Irving’s makeup and the difference of how he used to look like is really amazing. He used to look really fake but in this movie, he looks like a genuine 86 year-old man. Since I’ve never seen Jackass before (Irving is a character from the series), the first time I watched this movie, I really thought it was a real old man. That’s how believable he is.

The movie is HILARIOUS. I wasn’t expecting that since I’m not a fan of hidden camera type of movie. I seriously hate toilet humor like fart jokes or anything nasty and there are a few nasty scenes but somehow the reactions from the people were hilarious and makes up for it.

I love Billy. He’s this foul-mouthed, pokerfaced and very honest kid yet so very innocent-looking. I love the part where he goes up to a random person and starts calling the guy his new ‘dad’. Or the part when he’s looking for his missing grandpa, goes up to a lady at an adult store to ask about his grandpa, and asks her if she’s a stripper and have a stripper name (because of her sexy dress). Then he says, “I’ll call you Cinnamon“.

There are a few of my most favorite ‘pranks’. The first one being the strip club scene. The grandpa goes into a male strip club for black women, so he’s the only odd white old dude there. All of a sudden he starts dancing, strips down to his undie and his balls starts ‘hanging’ out. It’s so fricken hilarious.

Now,  my most fave scenes of all is the pageant scene. Grandpa enters Billy into a pageant contest by dressing up Billy into a girl who goes by the name of ‘Lindsey Dill‘ so they could win some money. At first, it’s all the typical pageant stuff until the ‘talent’ part. Billy starts dancing to the innocent ‘My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean‘ song until of all suddenly, strips down to some sexy stripper clothes and starts dancing to ‘Cherry Pie‘ song. It ends with the most awkward single clap by a woman.

Maximum hilarity.

I highly recommend ‘Bad Grandpa‘ especially if you like hidden camera pranks type of movie/show or a big fan of Jackass and Johnny Knoxville but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. There are a lot of inappropriate ‘pranks’ which some people might find disturbing, stupid and simply not funny at all.
